Cameron to urge public sector workers not to strike

The Guardian reports that David Cameron will appeal directly to public sector workers not to go on strike this week, telling an audience of local government leaders that the current public sector pension arrangements are “not fair to the taxpayer”.

The prime minister will intervene in the row between the government and unions over pension reforms after talks on Monday failed to negotiate a settlement to avoid mass walk-outs on Thursday.

Up to 750,000 teachers, lecturers and civil servants are preparing to strike over the reforms.

In a speech to the Local Government Association in Birmingham on Tuesday, Cameron is expected to say that the current system is “unsustainable” and reforms are inevitable

How one disabled woman’s letter may change a northern town

Campaigning for a better world can be hard and disheartening, but sometimes one small but passionate gesture makes a difference.

That’s the case in Bolton which launches a campaign against the mockery and worse of disabled people, this Saturday 25 June.

The neighbourhood policing team, Bolton’s community safety people and the town centre’s business partnership got together after reading a letter from a young disabled woman. You can read it in full

Further education colleges fear ‘bursary shortfall’

BBC News reports that some further education colleges do not believe they have been given enough money for a new bursary scheme to meet the needs of their students, according to the Association of Colleges.

The body said the total funding for the bursaries in England was almost £65m lower than it had expected.

Donor recruitment falls on the street and the doorstep

Public Fundraising Regulatory Association says the 20 per cent drop followed ‘unsustainable’ sign-up levels the previous year. Kaye Wiggins reports

The number of donors recruited by street fundraisers fell by almost 20 per cent last year, according to figures published today by the Public Fundraising Regulatory Association. The number recruited through door-to-door fundraising fell by almost 14 per cent.

The figures, based on returns from the PFRA’s 115 members, which include agencies and charities, show that 177,665 new donors were recruited on the street in the financial year 2009/10, compared with 221,914 in 2008/09 – a fall of 19.9 per cent.

Charity Chief Exec dismissed

Former chief executive Chris Hedges had been jailed for sex with 14-year-old girl

THE MAN at the helm of a Hampshire charity for four years was a convicted child sex offender, the Daily Echo can reveal.

Trustees of Open Sight were unaware that Chris Hedges had been jailed after admitting five cha-rges of having unlawful sex with a 14-year-old girl.

They didn’t carry out a criminal records check when they recruited him because the job didn’t involve him coming into contact with young people.

However, the Daily Echo has discovered that his role changed over time and he ended up dealing with vulnerable youngsters, even though he had been banned for life from working with children.

Hedges’ sick past only came to light after he was dismissed from his chief executive post for alleged bullying. Trustees told the Daily Echo that he would never have been offered the job if they had known about his convictions.

None of the current board of trustees of Open Sight, which supports thousands of people with sight loss across Hampshire, were in place when Hedges was appointed more than four years ago.

But a spokesman for the charity, which has bases in Eastleigh and Bishopstoke, confirmed Hedges had never made anyone aware of his previous conviction, or the fact that he is on the sex offenders’ register.

The Chandlers are freed …

What a relief for the Chandlers and all their family and friends after being held captive for 388 days and finally released virtually unharmed.

Theirs was a situtation that no-one could have imagined happening when leaving the Seychelles on their yacht over a year ago. But, marine piracy and the taking of hostages abroad is becoming more common place. Only last month, a British security consultant was visiting Adado in Somalia to see if the area was safe enough for Save the Children to set up a base there was kidnapped.

This subject is now something all businesses and charitable organisations should be considering when sending British workers abroad.
